Prowling the streets and sliding in and out of the shadows as midnight breaks is a tribe of Jellicle Cats gathering in celebration.

In Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats, presented next week by Stage Door Youth Theatre, these enigmatic characters reveal their secret lives outside of their domesticated homes.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show will bring to life a gang of famous felines, including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.

For one special night of the year - the Jellicle Ball - each tribe member tells their story to Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader. They reveal their three names: the first, used daily by their family; the second, more dignified; and the third, a secret. Old Deuteronomy must choose one cat each year to ascend to The Heaviside Layer to be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Artistic Director Janet Philbrook said: "Cats is predominantly a dance show - something Stage Door hasn't tackled in its 10 years of existence. The 41 cast members, ranging in age from nine to 21, have worked tirelessly to produce a fantastic piece of theatre that all audience members will love. All the costumes have been individually designed and painted by a small team, the wigs have been individually sourced and the make-up is being applied by both cast and a team from Nelson and Colne College! The musical director is Matt Leedam and Helen Cheung from Encore school of Dance has brought her professional touches to the bigger dance pieces. All in all a perfect combination for a very successful and thoroughly enjoyable, ground-breaking show from the young people of Stage Door!"

Cats will be performed from Thursday to Saturday at The Muni, Colne, beginning at 7-30pm. A matinee will take place on Saturday at 2pm.

Tickets are £12 for adults and £10 for concessions. Family tickets are available for £40.
