Queenie tells the tale of 1953, when Elizabeth is crowned Queen of England. Elsie Kettle can’t wait to go to London to see the celebrations of Coronation Day. She lives with her nan, because her mum works as a showgirl and is not around so often.

Spirited and imaginative, but often lonely, Elsie longs for a best friend. Tragedy strikes when both fall ill with tuberculosis and Elsie finds herself whisked away to the children’s ward of a hospital. Confined to bed for months on end, Elsie finds it very hard to adapt to the hospital’s strict regime and so she invents astonishing ways to entertain the other children on the ward and in the process makes lots of friends.
