Wannabe fashion designers invited to 'upcycle' old clothes in Gawthorpe competition

Young people are being invited to take an old t-shirt and transform it into something better.

The competition, run by the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, gives young people the opportunity to explore an alternative to fast fashion.

The aim is to introduce the notion of reuse and repair and the opportunity to upcycle and customise their own clothes.

Bev Lamey, Ethical Textiles Community Engagement Officer at Gawthorpe Hall, said: "We all have old t shirts that have seen better days – this is a chance to give it a new life instead of it being thrown away and put into landfill.

"The competition has been supported by some local businesses to fund the prizes. There is a shopping voucher worth £30 for the winner in each category (thanks to Mitchell Interflex) and prizes for the runners up including £5 gift voucher for Turtlebee zero waste shop.

"In addition a number of entrants will be offered one day work experiences with creative businesses. Companies offering work experience visits include: Super Slow Way; Mitchell Interflex Weaving Mill; Coverme Modest Fashion design; Alex Hurst Photographer; and Gawthorpe Textiles Collection.

The closing date of the competition is midnight on Friday January 1st.
