A retired librarian has compiled a collection of photographs and memories of life in Fence over the years.

Shirley Ellis, who was awarded the MBE for services to libraries, has recently released “Views of a Village: Memories of Old Laund Booth”.

Mrs Ellis (72), of Brierfield, said: “The idea for this came when I was librarian at the village library.

“Through conversations with residents, I began to gain an interest in what the area was like in past times, and to this end I began recording interviews with some of the residents and collecting some of their photographs.

“Earlier this year I decided that, after 15 years, it was time to publish these memories.”

The book is on sale at the Post Office in Fence and local libraries.
