Nelson fatal fire still “unexplained”

The death of a man in a house fire in Nelson is still being investigated by police.

The body of a 41-year-old man was found by firefighters in the mid-terraced house in Princess Street around 1-15am on Saturday.

Police have confirmed the cause of the fire remains unexplained but they are not treating it as suspicious.

Det. Insp Nick Hodgeson, from Pennine CID, said: “The man has still to be formally identified, and a file is expected to be passed to the East Lancashire Coroner.”

Two fire engines from Nelson arrived at the scene at 1-15am when they found a mid-terraced property on fire with smoke spreading to one of the houses next door.

Four teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house with hose reels.

A joint investigation between Lancashire Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is still ongoing.
