New figures reveal that 300 people in Burnley were claiming out of work benefits last month, an increase of 22% compared to this time last year.
The data, released by Burnley Jobcentre, also revealed a slight 5% increase in the 18 to 24 age group – but staff at the centre were keen to highlight recruitment opportunities still available.
The claimant count includes those who are on Job Seekers Allowance or who are searching for work on the new Universal Credit.
Heather Murray, partnership manager at the Jobcentre, said: “Primark, who are coming to Burnley next year, will be creating around 100 jobs with further discussions around recruitment planned for the new year.
“Meanwhile, both Burnley and Accrington Jobcentres have been working with Costa Coffee on its recruitment, with group interview sessions held in the Jobcentres to select candidates for interview. Several people have secured employment this month.
“There is also on-going recruitment with Boo Hoo working in partnership with us by attending group interviews at Burnley Jobcentre. There is a weekly recruitment on-going for 100 to 200 staff. Boo Hoo continue to expand and is Burnley’s largest recruiting employer.”
A disability confident event took place at Burnley Football Club in November which saw the Jobcentre working with Burnley MP Julie Cooper.
Guest speakers delivered presentations on how employing people from disadvantaged groups can make a real difference to a company. A high number of employers signed up to the disability confident scheme.
