Game Review: LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

Imagine a world where all the superheroes and super villains teamed up?

Lex luther helping Superman or even the Joker BFFing it with Batman can you imagine such a thing ??

Well folks it does happen in LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, another chapter in the franchise from Warner Brothers and TT Games.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham has it all cities, space lots of action, brilliant script and voice acting.

With Lego batman 3 the developers haven`t really changed the format since the last game and that’s a good thing, there are a number of elements that have been taken from previous LEGO games and it all ties together well.

To be honest don`t expect anything spectacular it is just another LEGO game after all, fans will be pleased though as it has the usual funny script and great voice overs, not so sure about the new grumpier Batman that they seem to be going for here but it works well within the story.

The story is that a cyborg super villain is busy shrinking cities all over the Universe and collecting them, he obviously sets his sights on earth and its upto our team of good and bad guys to take him down. The narrative works well and gives the developers the chance to go beyond Gotham (hence the title) and head out to other worlds.

Gameplay is what you would expect from a Lego game with plenty of puzzles and elaborate mechanisms and devices to unlock, this can be a tad frustrating at times and apart from the helper (occasionally Conan Obrien, who came up with that choice??) there isn`t much help so be prepared to use the old noggin from time to time, each character picks up a number of different costumes which all have different weapons or features and these are accessible via the Y button. Now one problem I did come across is remembering what all these different outfits do.

Graphics are superb especially on next gen consoles and free roaming seems to be unlimited you can roam around the Batcave, Hall of justice and the Watchtower, and with eight planets to explore there is plenty to do, everywhere you look there are little side missions and hidden characters to unlock.

Realistically this is more of a Justice league game than a Batman game because once you are into space and hanging out with the likes of Green lantern and the Flash, Batman becomes almost a background figure.

I thought the idea of having Adam west (the original Batman) make an appearance in every mission a nice touch, would have been cool to have him do the voice of Batman as the new Batman is pretty one dimensional.

The script and voice acting is superb and has the usual wacky sense of humour we have all come to know from this franchise.

There are a 150 DC universe characters to choose from and these are available in free roam mode.

Summary

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a DC comic book fans heaven, there is so much to do in this game it’s almost overwhelming, the look and feel of the game is typical LEGO and that’s a good thing in my opinion, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham does take the game to another level and with all this content and great gameplay it’s certainly not a disappointment, a must game this year and it all works well just what were they thinking using Conan O’Brien???
