Trio recognised at the sports awards

Community Club of the Year: Burnley Rounders Club

Burnley Rounders Club received the ‘Community Club of the Year’ award and proud recipients of highly commended trophies in the ‘School of the Year – Primary’ and ‘Young Achiever of the Year’ accolades were Holy Trinity CofE Primary and 17-year-old Katie Rennolds.

Since its formation in 2013, Burnley Rounders Club has increased participation from 18 women to 27 outdoor and 36 indoor teams.

World record holders for the largest game of rounders, the club has raised more than £3,500 for various charities and boasts a number of ‘stars’ who have been featured in national advertising campaigns.

Working hard with local and community clubs to encourage more regular participation in sport and games, Holy Trinity CofE Primary is reaping the benefits from its many initiatives.

These include ‘mile-a-day’ where children and staff walk, jog or run around the school field or playground, Change4Life clubs where 40-45 pupils enjoy a healthy breakfast and learn about nutrition, healthy eating and the benefits of exercise and half-termly celebration sports assemblies, which parents are also invited to.

The school’s efforts have resulted in improved pupil behaviour and performance.

A member of Burnley Bobcats ADM, Katie usually spends more than 20 hours a week training, covering up to 60km distance.

With a raft of county and regional titles to her name, as well as England Schools National Champion, she is part of England Talent Beacon Group and acts as a mentor to younger children in the squad.

They were three of 20 volunteers, facilitators and clubs recognised on the night across nine categories by Lancashire Sport Partnership, an organisation which works to improve health and wellbeing across the county by encouraging active lifestyles.

Celebrating sporting achievement and recognising individuals’ dedication and contribution to sport and community activity, the glittering ceremony attracted more than 400 guests, including local authority partners and the who’s who of the county’s sporting sector.
