After coming on as a substitute to equalise for England in their 2-1 reverse in the group stages against Romania, he became the Three Lions’ youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer at 18 years and 19 days.

He backed that up with a never-to-be-forgotten goal in the last 16 against Argentina.

The Three Lions exited the tournament on penalties, but a star was born.

The Liverpool star would go on and play for Real Madrid, Newcastle, Manchester United and Stoke in a glittering career which saw him win the Ballon d’Or in 2001.

Burnley Belvedere Under 9s were the lucky recipients of a special training session with Owen, won by manager Anthony Routh, as part of Cadbury’s ‘Buy a Legend, Win a Legend’ competition.

Owen came came to Holden Road to help Anthony run a 90-minute session, with the children, where they received invaluable advice.
