Writers are inspired by local history

Two local writers will be running workshops this month for anyone with an interest in writing, local history or who has ever lived close to the Weavers’ Triangle.

On Friday, local playwright and novelist Richard Macsween will be running a free workshop at the Vanguard Community Centre, Bevington Close, Burnley from 9-30 a.m. to noon, focusing on how images can inspire us to develop stories about this fascinating area of Burnley.

He’ll be joined by Lancashire dialect poet Mervyn Hadfield, who was brought up in the Weavers’ Triangle. His dialect poems and stories have a humorous but honest take on local characters and events from that area.

And on Sunday, June 26th, Sarah Lee will lead a workshop at the Red Triangle Cafe in St James Street, Burnley from 11 a.m. to 3-30 p.m.

Sarah has just published her first collection of poems about the Pennines – Curlew on Rain Slack.

She will be encouraging people to contribute lines for an atmospheric poem using all our senses and will be focusing on a particular form, the sonnet, to create a poem of appreciation about the area.
