The ladies of Brook Street, Clitheroe, in 1953

THis formidable looking bunch are the ladies of Brook Street, Clitheroe, photographed on the stone-flagged pavement of their street in 1953.

The picture has been lent to us by Mrs Anne Storer (neé White), whose mother, Evelyn White, and grandmother, Kate White, both feature on it. Other faces she can put a name to are Betty Fenton, Mrs Abbot, Mrs Gidlow, Mrs Alston, Sheila Cornwall and her mother and Sonia Thornber with her mother.

Anne, who now lives in Lincolnshire, has no idea why the photo was taken, but would love to know more about it. She wonders if it was anything to do with preparations for a street party to mark the Queen’s Coronation, also in 1953. In any case, she thinks it was a Monday, as her grandma, on the far right, is wearing her clogs and hessian apron – attire for Monday washday.
