Roy, who lives in Wheatley Close, Fence, served in the RAF in the war and in 2013 was given the Freedom of Nelson because of his role. Regarding his Buckingham Palace invitation he said: “It is a privilege and an honour to attend this prestige event.”

He is representing his Air Force Squadron for his services in the war. He is, of course, also taking his partner Barbara, who was a regular famed dancer on television in the past.

And she revealed: “I am very proud of Roy, and am really looking forward to the event at Buckingham Palace. We are shortly off to Malta to meet up with friends in the British Legion in Valetta. Roy will be 95 years old when he attends the event next year!”

And Roy said: “It was a complete surprise when I received the letter, regarding the invitation.”

Roy has also been asked to create a folder of memorabilia from his RAF for a new RAF museum in St Annes. It is going to be in a section at Blackpool Airport.

Barbara said: “I think that’s also an achievement for Roy. I live in St Annes, so he has already had a meeting with a representative from the RAF. They were so pleased to have all the information that Roy took him. Roy was thrilled to bits to have been asked by them to help in this project.”
