Michelin reunion planned decade after closure

FORMER Michelin workers are being invited to a grand reunion to mark 10 years since the site’s closure.

Michelin Tyre PLC was a major tyre manufacturer which originated in France but opened its first plant in this country in 1905.

The Burnley site was based in Bancroft Road, just off Eastern Avenue, and over the years it employed hundreds of people from the town.

Mr Craig Grundy, a former worker who has organised the reunion, said: “When the Michelin Athletic Club (MAC) was opened in Widow Hill Road it provided a social base for the employees and their families. The club held many social events for its employees, their families and the local community. Sadly when the factory closed its doors for the final time in 2002 the MAC was closed with it. The closure of both these sites was a major loss to the town and it affected many families in the local area.”

The event will take place on Friday, March 30th, at Byerden House Club from 7-30 p.m. There will be a singer, disco and buffet. Tickets are £7 from Craig on 01282 703920 or 07832080811 or Deborah on 07515115837.
