Christine Hamlett (58), who has appeared on television as a rescue medium, visited the graveyard at St Mary’s Church, Newchurch-in-Pendle, in the run-up to Hallowe’en a bid to make contact with the spirits of the people hanged following the famous Lancashire Witch Trials of 1612.

Christine admitted she felt strange and apprehensive during the ghoulish expedition but thinks the haunting pictures show a girl in a white dress which she believes could be the ghost of Jennet Device.

“What I do is visit places and ask the spirits to show themselves and I take photos.

“I’ve noticed it’s been happening more and more over the last 12 months.

“I then scrutinise the photos, turn them round and upside down.

“When you read the story of the Pendle witches there is mention of Jennet Device who was aged nine to 12. She was the one that dobbed the rest of her family in.

The photos show a young girl in a white dress with long hair.

“The photos also show a girl’s face on a tombstone.”

Christine, who lives in Cheshire, said a more sinister image also reveals the outline of a skull, while a man with a beard and dressed in old-fashioned clothes shows himself on another photo.

Christine, who said she has also performed spells for friends and family, said that could be the ghost of one of the judges at the trial, which was held in Lancaster.

“Because I can reach out to spirits and speak to them that’s why they appear on my photographs. It seems that’s what’s happening.

“I felt a bit strange actually I felt uneasy and a bit apprehensive but I have a good spirit guide and she was with me.”

The trials of the Pendle witches 400 years ago are some of the most famous in English history.

Ten of the 12 accused lived in the area around Pendle Hill and were charged with murder by the use of witchcraft. Of the 11 who went to trial – nine women and two men – 10 were found guilty and executed by hanging, one was found not guilty.

Christine, a grandmother, said she will be celebrating Hallowe’en with a family party.

“I love Hallowe’en. I usually have a massive party for the grandchildren and their friends, take them trick or treating and watch a scary film.”
