The prominent listed building in Colne Road, which gives its name to the Duke Bar area, has been bought by a un-named Burnley businessman after being on the market for a number of years.

The pub, built in 1881 on the site of an older building from the 1820s, has been empty for several years.

Mr Ali Anwar, senior salesman for Imana Estates, which sold the pub, said: “The Duke of York is a well-known, very historic landmark building on a prominent route into Burnley.

“I am as happy as anyone that it has finally been sold and will be brought back into use. It will also create many new jobs in the local area.

“The buyer, who does not wish to be named, is planning to spend a lot of money refurbishing the building to create an Asian restaurant.

“He wants to retain many of the original features and may even incorporate the name into the new title of the restaurant.”

Mr Anwar said the owner did not anticipate any problems with parking for customers.

It is believed the pub was bought for around £150,000.

In recent years, the Duke of York has had somewhat of a chequered history, being damaged in the 2001 disturbances and also being used as a cannabis factory.

The building is situated on the site of a former toll bar. When the Burnley Militia was formed in 1853, the men paraded and practices in a field near the Duke of York Hotel three times a day.
