Tracey Neville’s Roses went in level at half-time at 25-25 and came from four points down in the final quarter to win.

Neville said: "The girls have worked so hard over the last international phase.

"Australia are the renowned, world number ones and to beat them at that time, I'm really, really proud - the feeling of that is amazing."

It is the best result in England's history, having previously won silver at the 1975 World Cup in a round-robin format, and next on the horizon is the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool.

For Haythornthwaite, it caps a remarkable few years which have seen her be voted Netball Superleague player of the season in 2015, before helping new franchise Wasps win the Superleague in their first season last year.

She is also a European champion with England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 level.
