SIR John Thursby Community College have won the Lancashire Emerging Schools’ county table tennis title.
The final saw schools from the 14 Boroughs of Lancashire compete to win the title.
Sir John Thursby qualified for the final as the Burnley representative after beating all other schools from the town in the local qualifier held back in October.
After comfortably progressing through the group stages at the county competition, it was an East Lancashire derby in the final as Sir John Thursby took the title in a hard-fought battle against Accrington team St Christopher’s.
Up until three years ago there had never been a table tennis competition in Burnley.
The sports partnership challenged local schools to field a team for a table tennis competition, which has engaged different children from those that may play the more traditional sports of football and athletics.
It is these schools who are new to competitive table tennis that are eligible to enter the competition.
After Sir John Thursby won the Burnley Schools’ competition, the school has seen a huge increase in the number of children taking up the sport.
The school have recently launched their own Change for Life Table Tennis Club, and now link in with the East Lancashire centre of excellence for Table Tennis based at Hyndburn Leisure Centre to further progress their up and coming stars.
