Three of Sandygate’s schoolboy prospects boxed for a place in the last eight of England in the Schoolboy Championship last week.
Hoping to join stable mate Rio “DJ” Lynch (12) who received a bye, Ighten Leigh’s North West champion “Smokin’” Joe Crawford (13) boxed Merseyside champion E.Delaney (Wirral ABC) in Liverpool.
In a cracking contest, the first round was a scrappy affair with both boys jockeying for centre ring, with Crawford on top in the clinches.
The second and third saw the St Christopher’s pupil dominate, catching Delaney frequently, especially with his two phase attacks and hook to body and head combinations.
Crawford’s hand was raised the victor.
Hasan Khan (11) and Jayden Howarth-Franklin (12) both narrowly lost out on split decisions against their Merseyside counterparts in their first year in the prestigious competition.
Meanwhile, Saturday night saw Ryan “The Lion” Haythornthwaite (14) make his Sandygate debut against L. Kane (Preston ABC).
Hawthornethwaite didn’t disappoint as he put in a dominant display on the Macauley Moran Memorial Show in Manchester in front of a sell out crowd, which included many professional champions including Jamie Moore, Martin Murray and Anthony Crolla.
Haythornthwaite controlled the ring from the off, keeping the taller Kane on the back foot through out, earning a unanimous decision from the judges.
