Sell-out crowd royally entertained by Sandygate

Burnley Mechanics played host to Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club’s first home show of the season, with a sell-out crowd in attendance.

The Burnley club started the show with skills bouts as Cherry Fold pupil Stuart “Rocket” Reilly (10) took on J.Topham (Littleborough ABC) at 30kg.

Charly “Blue” Vassilev (10) faced T. Varey (Love ABC) in a thriller, which saw Vassilev’s aggressive style to the fore.

Holy Trinity Year 6 pupil Dalton “Weekly” Stoiles (11) competed against H.Faqir (Blackburn ABC) in a one-sided affair, which the impressive Stoiles dominated, and Cliviger Primary pupil Troy “Big-Foot” Richmond (10) was named boxer of the night for his display against A.Barnes (Border City ABC).

Sandygate 68kg female Lucy “Beast” Halstead (15) tyrannized A.Bateson (Preston ABC), with the St.Christopher’s Year 11 pupil’s height and strength apparent.

Unity’s Sam Walsh’s opponent D. Turnbell (Border City) weighed in 3kg too heavy, so a skills bout was arranged.

The first competitive contest saw Blessed Trinity pupil Bram “Pretty-Boy” Richmond (12) box C.Daniels (Fox ABC) at 41kg. The first saw Richmond’s rigid rights penetrate the tight guard of the impressive Daniels. The second and third were a real tear up, with judges giving Richmond a unanimous verdict.

Unity pupil Jaden “JDogg” Franklin (13) was on the wrong end of a split decision against A.Afazal (Bury ABC) in a 44kg bout. Stoop’s Estate’s North West Minor’s Champion Rio “DJ” Lynch (12) produced a controlled display against J.Woodhall (Peoples ABC) at 41kg, earning a unanimous sweep.

Ightenhill’s “Smokin’”Joe Crawford (13) was matched against Z.Ahmed (Bury ABC) with both boys North West Schoolboy champions at different weights. Crawford came out on top in the first, and the second was classy Crawford’s best, increasing his workrate and scoring with each attack.

The final round was again the Sandygate fighter’s, earning the hot prospect a unanimous rout. Hameldon’s Reiko “Rit” Rickwood (13) narrowly lost a split verdict against Yorkshire’s A.Dixon (Burmatoft ABC) in a great contest.

Blessed Trinity pupil, North West champion James “Elvis” Danson (15), faced Mancunian D.Simmonds (Middleton ABC). Danson’s aggressive come-forward style shone, never taking a step back, as he earned a unanimous verdict.

Ending the night’s entertainment was North West 50kg champion Ryan “Rebel” Haythornthwaite (15) against H.Hardy (Stockport ABC).

The Hargreaves Street boxer controlled the first round, but the second saw the very durable Hardy pull it round. It was all on the third, and the Burnley boxer came through with another unanimous decision
