Sandygate’s Bam Bam’s a knockout

Burnley’s Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club added another national title to the collectioon when on form ‘Bam-Bam’ Brendan Collins boxed in the England Boxing Junior Development 50kg National Final against Kent’s Thomas Price.

Having won the North-West mantle, stopping the Merseyside champion in the first round, beating the Midland’s champ in a corker and winning against the unbeaten Tyne Tee’s and Yorkshire champ unanimously, the prospect of a 600-mile round trip to box in his opponent’s own back yard was not going to faze the young starlet.

The opening two minute round started fast with the aggressive Price looking to add another stoppage to his card, Collins side stepped the advances and just countered with pin-point precision frustrating the Kentish-man as the Sandygate boxer took total control of the contest moving target area with ease catching price every time with his lead hand jab followed by hooks from either side.

The second once again was to be the Shuttleworth Year 11 pupil as the now behind Price became quite scrappy.

Collins kept his impressive work rate even in the clinches, hooking to the body keeping to his plan. The third and final rubber stamped just how good a prospect the young Collins is, countering, switching his phases of attack with the ease of a seasoned professional favouring his lead, rear hand hook, lead hand hook combination the gulf widened

It was the perfect end to the year for the Hargreaves Street Club when Collins’ hand was raised the victor with another unanimous decision and national recognition. Collins now joins a very impressive list at the Sandygate club and keeps the run of five national finalist’s in five consecutive years running. The club wont be resting over the festive period either preparing all its Pugilists for the Championships in 2015 which start with the Youth Championships in January.
