Burnley’s Sandygate ABC’s pair of pugilistic prospects fought close to home this weekend boxing at the New Era Complex, Accrington.

First up saw “Padiham Power Station” Brandon Hartley (15) face S. Youlds (Clayton ABC) in a one-sided contest.

Hartley (pictured) dominated from the opening bell, keeping centre and scoring with ease, making great use of his left hand throughout. The second and third saw Acers secondary pupil Hartley hit, hurl, hound and harass Yould,s with a constant barrage of hooks, switching head to body to head, scoring at will, the referee studying close during the round after a vicious volley of blows.

All judges scored in favour of Hartley.

Nelson’s Charlie ‘“Celtic Mauler” Martin (14) squared up to Chris Keeler (Beartown ABC) in a real humdinger of a contest. Straight from the off the Holmes Street boxer gave Keeler not a inch, switching from head to body, phase attacking using every inch of the square circle, striking at will.

Keeler, a smart, tall boxer, moved well and countered, but the Sandygate boxer countered controlled and calculated, moving from body to head with great results. Keeler’s upper-cut straight combo was always a danger, yet Martin’s defences could not be penetrated.

The second was a much closer affair with both schoolboy prospects upping the ante and producing a classic round of the noble art. The third and final round saw a flurry of fists from Charlie, scoring with a jab, lead hook, right hand left hook combo. Sensing a stoppage, the local boxer pushed onto the resilient Cheshire fighter.

Judges ringside all scored the bout in favour of the Sandygate boxer.

Sandygate coach Nik Tucker was over the moon with the boys: “Hartley not only faced a tough boy, he had a hostile home crowd against him although he did not allow it to faze him. As for Martin, with the work he puts in at the gym I was not surprised with such a measured performance.”

Club stalwart Bob Rosbotham, also ringside was over the moon with the club’s latest performance, saying: “Charlie is just like unbeaten local professional Shayne Singleton was as a schoolboy, relentless and resourceful.”
