Laura sets sights on 2016 Olympics after British title victory

A BURNLEY College lecturer is on the road to Rio after winning the British Taekwondo Championships at Coventry’s Sky Dome.

Laura Ashton, lecturer in Children, Young People and their Services said: “It was absolutely fantastic when I realised I was in with a real chance of winning.

“I’ve been training for this competition solidly for nine months.

“It has inspired me to step up my training.”

Talent scouts from the GB Olympic team attended the event to identify potential Team GB competitors.

Laura is keen to take up an opportunity to train with them, with the ultimate goal of competing in the Olympics.

Laura took up Taekwondo four years ago to keep fit and trains up to three times a week at the Keith Raystricks School of Taekwondo in Todmorden and Elland.

“Training in Taekwondo develops your determination to attain your personal goals and I pass these principles on to help motivate my students.”

Laura is now working towards the more advanced blue tag belt.

She will be training hard to take on her next challenge of competing in the English and World Championships next year.
