Burnley suffered their first defeat of the season losing a close-fought match against there neighbours Haslingden, who now leapfrog them into second place in the North West Counties Squash League.

Jon Smith was defeated by Bruce Stewart in a steady match, in which the Haslingden player never looked in trouble.

This was followed by a rare defeat for Daniel Whittaker, who was not at the races as he lost 3-0.

Nik Czernianin battled his opponent with every shot he had, and on another day would have won, but it was not to be, losing 3-0.

Graham Riley continued his return to full fitness with a fine 3-0 victory.

His opponent tried to knock the cover off the ball, hitting every shot with all the power he had, but he had no answer to Riley’s brilliant boasts and control in a masterful display, continuing his run of victories to three.

Number one Rod Taggart was soon in trouble against Tan Hussain, a stylish and very fit Haslingden player, who had won all his matches

Hussain won the first game quite easily 15-7. He then relaxed, and that was the signal for Taggart to go on the attack, playing long rallies and moving Hussain all around the court.

The match was ended with a fantastic drop shot to secure victory to Taggart 3-1.
