Burnley Golf Club member Cath Briggs was recently inaugurated as the President of the East Lancashire Ladies Golf Association.

A retired sports scientist and graduate of the University of London Institute of Education, also played for and captained the England hockey team in July 1964, in the International Catholic Students Games as a 17-year-old.

The youngest-ever captain, she also captained the athletics team in the same games, gaining gold medals in the 80 metres and relay events.

The following year she was elected captain again for the same events in Namur, Belgium and again in the same roles in Madrid in 1966.

Cath has been a playing member of Burnley Golf Club for the past 30 years and has been Lady Captain, Team Captain, Open Competitions Secretary, an executive member of the Lancashire Ladies County Golf Association for four years, an executive member of the Captains’ and Past Captains’ of East Lancashire and Secretary of ELLGA for the past four years.

Prior to joining Burnley Golf Club, Cath was a member of Nelson Golf Club, joining in 1973, but was only available to play in the evenings as she was a lecturer at Nelson and Colne College, teaching full time.

Following a serious car accident in 1991, which left her unable to play golf for a number of years, Cath developed a further interest in the organisational side of golf, having been invited to be an executive member of ELLGA in 1990.

Although golfing activities play a large part of Cath’s life, she has many other interests, particularly gardening, cookery, photography, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, and not least knitting jumpers and blankets for many of her adopted Gambian families.

Following a holiday to the Gambia in the early 1990s, Cath and her husband David, a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, became members of Kololi Beach Club, and together with like-minded members helped to build a school for the surrounding Gambian community and still support many families there.

Cath said: “I have made some wonderful friends through sport and I have a huge network of students and friends all over the world who regularly keep in contact with me through various social media networks. I am extremely proud to have been elected as the ELLGA President and I know that Burnley Golf Club members will continue to be as supportive to me as they always have been in previous positions I have held.

“We have a number of open competitions to be held at Burnley this year, and if any ladies, gents or juniors are interested in joining, they will be sure of a great welcome.”
