Burnley Blaze, Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s Basketball Academy, are heading for national league and cup success.

The team reached the semi-finals of the British Colleges Sport Men’s Elite competition at Birmingham City University, beating Cardinal Newman, Runshaw and Tyne Metropolitan colleges.

They are also due to play in the BCS national finals at Bath University this month after winning a competition in Manchester, and they have reached the last 16 of the National England Basketball Cup where they will host Lordswood Sports Academy from Birmingham.

College Basketball Coach Malcolm Leak said: “The team has been committed to training and winning games all season, training before lessons and again when they have finished their academic studies. Everyone on the team has the same aim.”

Six foot nine inch Leak, who played in a professional summer league with “Magic” Johnson and made the last cut for NBA side the LA Clippers, and a number of the Blaze players are hoping to secure scholarships with American universities after completing their Advanced Level studies at Burnley Sixth Form Centre.
