BURNLEY Bobcats swim squad competed in the Final of Division 2 of the National Arena Swimming League at Kendal Leisure Centre on Saturday, and came away with the winners’ trophy and promotion to Division 1.
Having already won round one at Leigh in October and round two at Kendal in November, they travelled north again to Kendal to compete in the final. Their opponents was Clitheroe, Copeland, Preston and Wigan, three of whom they had already competed against.
Once again the Bobcats swimmers all gave excellent performances, gaining 37 podium places out of 50 races, 23 of those being first place.
Despite not being able to field a full squad and therefore having to concede four relay races, with a total of 20 points at stake, they still managed to storm to victory and win by 11 points over Preston.
With six relay races remaining, Bobcats were only one point ahead of Preston, but they secured their win by taking first place in five of the relays to maintain their lead.
The final results were Bobcats 176, Preston 165, Wigan 142, Copeland 139 and Clitheroe 114.
The winning team included, girls - Saffron Fenton, Anna Brown, Ellie Taylor, Madison Beswick, Lucy Cole, Grace Pickles, Emma Fothergill, Katie Rennolds, Erica Minozzi, Ella Sheridan, Kerry-Anne Holding, Marsha Banks and Abigail Pounder.
Boys - Alex Minozzi, Matthew Mackay, Elliot Norman, Harry Pilkington, Robert Bryce, Dean Moorhouse, Thomas Mackay, William Beaven, Thomas Hamer, Jamie Sharpley, Dan Fox, Ben Edwards, Luke Pickles and Ben Nutter.
In previous rounds swimmers Danielle Baxter, Mia Sheridan and Jack Chapman all swam.
It was a fantastic achievement for the Bobcats Arena League team, who until 2011 were in the Minor Division and have now gone from strength to strength and will be competing in Division 1 in 2013.
Bobcats Chairman Simon Holding says “We have come a long way in such a short space of time and it is a credit to all involved with the squad – a big team effort, well done.”
