Burnley Shotokan karate club recently took four competitors to the British Karate Championships in Bradford.

Jodie Carr became British champion in Girls’ Under 10 fighting, improving on her double bronze medals that she gained at the English Open in April.

Brandon Carr also became British champion in Boys’ Under 15 fighting shobo ippon, beating the winner of the shobo sanbon fighting in the final.

Both Jodie and Brandon automatically qualify for the WUKF World Childrens’/cadet/junior Championships in Serbia in October.

Sandra Carr and John Carr both gained third placings in their senior events, and have been invited to train with the senior national squad.

Michael Brett was representing the club and the AMA in the International Karate Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Michael proved to be unbeatable in the men’s junior heavyweight division, winning the gold medal and title as champion.

The club is looking for anyone who may be interested in forming an Under 16s team and Over 16ys team of men, ladies, boys and girls to attend future championships.

The next event for the club is the AMA North West open in Bury on September 9th.

Training starts now for those wishing to qualify for the WUKF senior/veterans World Championships 2013 in Romania.

Nick Keys 4th Dan, the club instructor and North West champion/North East team champion has also been host to one of the world’s leading Shotokan Karate instructors.

Sensei Tomiko Mitsuoka 7th Dan, former world champion and pioneer in ladies’ karate, held a Shotokan seminar for the club.

Another open seminar is planned for September.

Nick is also looking into bringing WSKF World Chief Instructor Sensei Kasuya to Burnley next year.

The club trains on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Spirit of Sport centre, upstairs in the studio rooms.

Anyone intrested in learning karate for sport or self defence, for a free first lesson, can contact Nick on 07737 243 027 or Anwar at the Spirit of Sport.
