Burnley Bobcats swimmer Katie Rennolds has recently been selected for the ASA Beacon Programme.
The programme’s aim is to nurture the next generation of young elite athletes who have been identified as having the talent to perform at a high level.
The commitment from both Sport England and the ASA builds on the success and experiences of the previous four-year cycle and is now being extended across all of the Olympic aquatic disciplines.
The Beacon Programme provides extra 50m pool time to the region’s top swimmers and coaches and aims to get more young athletes into the pool while providing them with high quality coaching.
Katie, 16, who is delighted and thrilled to have been selected onto the programme, has been a squad member at Burnley Bobcats for the past seven years and usually trains with them at the St Peter’s Centre seven times a week. Over the years she has competed to a very high standard and has been a national competitor on a number of occasions and has represented St Christopher’s CE School, Accrington, at the English Schools’ Swimming Competition. She excels in all four strokes, but her favourites are the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events, along with the 100m and 200m butterfly.
