Away wins for young Burnley boxers

Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club headed down the M6 to the Potteries as two of the club’s young starlets were matched on Stoke’s Tom Lowe ABC home show.

Rosehill’s “Burnley Terrier” Brandon Hird (10) pitted his skill against J. Burnett (Tom Lowe ABC) in an non-verdict exhibition bout which saw the young Burnley boxer dominate all three of the one-minute rounds.

Harle Syke’s Charlie “Chaos” Smith’s (11) opponent was home favourite M. Lowe (Tom Lowe ABC, 12). Straight from the opening bell, Southpaw Smith smothered his much taller foe with a ferocious barrage of body blows which seemed to silent the home support. Keeping centre then forcing Lowe onto his back foot onto the ropes, the Blessed Trinity Year 7 pupil had the edge in the first. Coming off his stool in the second, Smith had a new game plan, countering every miss with a kiln-hardened jab which seemed to stun Lowe. Switching attack from head to body, young Charlie ended the round up once more.

The third and final round saw a glazed Lowe cover up and return to the back foot with a fired-up Smith pushing forward throughout, countering and cutting the ring down to size, scoring with ease.

It was no surprise when the exciting Sandygate boxer’s hand was raised .

“Charlie took his fight to the local favourite and really impressed all present with a great display away from home. The Stoke lads are no pushovers but both boys made their mark” stated Sandygate coach Nik Tucker.
