Memorial race isbig hit with stars

The Jeff Varley Memorial Race, held at Prestige Indoor Karting in Colne, raised money for Pendleside Hospice where Nelson man and motorsport enthusiast Jeff died last October.

The go-karting race, which featured celebrity drivers Tony Worswick, a double EuroBoss Formula One champion, and rally driver John Morton, was organised by Jeff’s friend Alan Cooper.

Alan said: “Jeff was a keen driver himself and was a real motorsport enthusiast. He sadly lost his battle with cancer aged 54 and we wanted to give something back to the hospice.

“I was very close to Jeff and we discussed the possibility of arranging this event during his last few days. He asked if I could do this as a thank you for the incredible care he received there.

“I’m fortunate to have a motorsport background so I managed to attract some quality drivers.”

A prize-giving ceremony was held after the three-hour race when the winning team FX Motorsport was presented with its trophy at the Golden Ball in Colne.

Alan, whose team Majestic Care of Colne finished third, added: “The race was very demanding because the track was wet and all teams had to drive on slick tyres making it almost impossible to steer the karts round the twisty circuit. The favourites put their British rally champion, Nigel Worswick, out to drive first.

“It was a marvellous atmosphere and all the drivers enjoyed a good day’s motorsport, but most importantly we have hopefully raised a substantial amount of money for the hospice. There is already talk of repeating the event next year.”
