Lowerhouse want to fight on all fronts - Heaton

Lowerhouse chairman Stan Heaton emphasised the club's ambition to challenge on all fronts ahead of the season's first triple-header weekend.

The Lancashire League leaders, who retained their place at the summit with a comprehensive win over Bacup, are involved in three separate competitions.

The action starts against Todmorden in the Twenty20 competition tonight at Liverpool Road before the pair go head-to-head again in a league encounter the following day at Centre Vale.

The West Enders then travel to Penwortham to tackle Vernon Carus CC in the LCB Knockout Trophy on Sunday.

“We want to compete in every trophy,” said Heaton. “We continue in the league this weekend and start off in another two competitions.

“We like the Twenty20 competition. It’s great entertainment and it brings the crowds in. It’s good fun and a good money spinner for the club.”

Ben Heap was the top scorer against the division’s basement side last week but the 27-year-old was well backed by his supporting cast.

“He did really well,” said Heaton. “We ended up finishing the innings on 286 which we were actually disappointed with.

“I think that shows just how far we’ve come. Joe Martin and Joe Halstead batted really well and it was a shame they couldn’t quite make 50 because they both deserved it.

“I hope that’s the start of some big runs to come from them. I was very pleased for Josh Lavin too who has been very promising for a number of years.

“He was terrific at the end and batted really well. He batted cleverly and very sensibly to record his highest knock in the Lancashire League.”

Ahead of the county cup tie, Heaton added: “We know they are very tidy but we don’t look too deeply at the opposition.

“It’s all about how we play on the day. We’ll just weigh them up during the game.”

Elsewhere, Read and Padiham face each other in Group Three of the Twenty20 competition at the Arbories this evening.

Joe Marshall, who has taken on the captaincy from Kyle O’Connor at Whalley Road, will then lead his side out against Barnoldswick in the Ribblesdale Cricket League tomorrow on home soil.

Kurt Robinson’s Padiham entertain Cherry Tree.
