Golf Review: Towneley Golf Course (9-hole)

The sun’s burning a hole in the sky while your clubs burn a hole in a dust covered golf bag.

After a winter staring at courses where you’ve had more chance of finding Nemo than seeing a birdie, your swing is bound to have gathered a bit of rust.

Brunshaw 9-hole course at Towneley Golf Club is the ideal place for rediscovering that rhythm.

A tree-lined parkland course featuring a mix of par 3s and 4s along with stunning views of the Towneley estate and surrounding Burnley countryside.

The 1st hole. The scene of my first, only and probably last ever hole-in-one. A slightly uphill par 3, a bunker defends the front of the green while a raised banking leaves a tricky chip if you overshoot it.

At 187 yards uphill the 2nd hole with its raised green makes for a narrow target. Under hit it and you’re left with a delicate pitch on, put too much on and there’s a mountain of rough just waiting for you at the back.

The 3rd is a very reachable par 4 while the par 3 4th shouldn’t pose too many problems, unless you land in the trees to the left of the green (a fate I’ve come to know all too well).

A gorgeous par 3, the picturesque 5th slopes back down towards the car park, lined by a road to the left and a small forest to the right.

The relatively straightforward 6th and 8th holes (aside from a ditch running across both fairways) sandwich a 170 yard par 3 where if you’re planning to miss the green it’s definitely better to miss left and avoid the huge slope right .

The course signs off with with a short par 4 offering the perfect opportunity to leave with a three on the card and a spring in the step.
