Benjamin Mendy and Ferran Torres also netted as Pep Guardiola's men dubbed Sean Dyche’s side in Manchester.

The result marked a fourth successive 5-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium for the Clarets – an unwanted run.

But it was Mahrez who stole the headlines, with a classy display from the Algerian international attacker.

Indeed, when analysing the game for the BBC’s Match of the Day, Danny Murphy was certainly impressed.

“When he is at it you are in trouble and I felt for Burnley today as he was absolutely electric from the first minute.

“You know when skilful, creative players are up for it. The great thing about Mahrez is his balance and his ability to go both ways.

“His strongest thing is his first touch. Silky is a great word for it. That first goal gave him the confidence to get on the ball more. You kind of know what he is going to do but you can’t stop it. It’s like when Messi is going to get on his left foot.

“City just grew in confidence and they have needed this result for a while. [Kevin] De Bruyne was at it as well, opening Burnley up.

“He always plays the right pass and makes it easy at times.

“Mahrez should play more, for me, I don’t think rotation helps him. You saw how good he was at Leicester in the season when they won the title.”
