‘The wins will come’ – Dyche

Clarets boss Sean Dyche insists Burnley will get the points they need to seal promotion if they maintain their performance levels from Saturday.

His side could have clinched a return to the Premier League with victory over Middlesbrough, allied with a draw or defeat for Derby at home to Huddersfield.

However, a 1-0 defeat to Boro, coupled with a 3-1 win for Derby against nine-man Town means the Rams cut the deficit to eight points with 12 available.

But Burnley only require five points to ensure they can’t be caught, and Dyche is confident displays of the like they produced against Boro - enjoying 71% possession, 27 shots to 10 and 14 corners - will serve them well: “There was that edge of disappointment but I told them that’s one of the most thorough displays of the season, totally dominant here at Turf and we’ve had some very dominant ones. The stats have broken the machine.

“I think there were 27 chances. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen.

“Football’s an amazing thing, that’s why we love it. But one thing’s for sure, our performance level was very high again. We’ve set that bar high. If we keep performing like that, every week, each game that comes - the next one’s Blackpool away - I can assure you there will be wins coming.”

Asked how he assessed the situation ahead of Friday’s trip to Blackpool, Dyche focussed on the positives: “It’s a simple assessment from us. If you’re a Burnley fan or part of Burnley Football Club and at the beginning of the season when we’d just sold Charlie Austin, someone said ‘by the way, with four games to go you’ll be eight points clear of third place’, I don’t think there would be too many disappointed. So I’m not disappointed.

“I’m disappointed with the result of course, but not with a performance like that.

“We take that mentality, that energy, that quality into the next one.

“Whatever happens we take it into the next one. It still is that clear mantra, one game at a time, so we’ll be focusing on the next one.

“Our mantra, our focus is exactly the same. Win, lose or draw our mantra stays the same.”
