The study from betoclock.com/ analysed every single VAR decision in Europe’s top-five leagues since the start of the 2019/20 campaign, and found that the 15 stadiums with the most reviews were all home to Premier League clubs.

Leicester City’s King Power Stadium has seen the most stoppages this season (21) - including one to chalk off a Chris Wood equaliser in October - ahead of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Old Trafford, and Molineux (all 19).

A further 10 Premier League stadiums have seen between 12 and 17 VAR reviews this year, before the first non-English club on the list – Italy’s Sampdoria – rank alongside Everton with 11 stoppages during home fixtures.

Turf Moor sits 17th overall in Europe. During their 15 home games this season, Burnley have averaged 0.67 VAR stoppages per game.

Newcastle’s St James’ Park is a Premier League outlier, with halts in play for VAR occurring on just four occasions during games in the North East.

However, there are still 18 other clubs across the Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Serie A with fewer reviews in their home stadiums.

A spokesperson for Bet O’Clock said: “Despite claims that the Premier League hopes VAR reviews won’t be too intrusive to matches, the league’s officials seem far more keen to stop games for checks than in other countries.

“On the whole, English fans seem to be fairly dissatisfied with the implementation of the technology, and it is certainly understandable for regulars at the King Power Stadium.

"But, while the football may not always be scintillating at St James’ Park, at least Newcastle fans don’t have to sit through too many stoppages for VAR.”
