‘We’ve got work to do’ - Eddie Howe

CLARETS boss Eddie Howe accepts there is a lot of hard work to be done to eradicate the defensive lapses that cost his side dearly on Tuesday night.

Charlie Austin gave Burnley the lead three times at Turf Moor against Sheffield Wednesday, only for the Owls to come back three times to earn a point.

Only Wednesday have conceded more goals in the Championship than the Clarets, and he admitted: “We weren’t good enough defensively through the whole team.

“I felt we were open as soon as we kicked off.

“We didn’t defend well enough individually or collectively.

“We’ve got work to do.

“When we’ve scored the third goal and there isn’t long left on the clock we’ve got to make better decisions.

“The second goal was the worst though. I’ll have to see it again but I’m amazed how he (Chris O’Grady) has walked through the centre of our defence unopposed.

“We’ve got to make sure we go away and work on that.

“It’s hugely disappointing and frustrating.”

Howe did feel, however, that his side passed the ball as well as they have done at times in the first half - particularly in crafting Austin’s first two goals to take a 2-1 half-time lead: “There were periods in the first half I thought we played as well as we have done ths season.

“The first goal was fantastic – a really good move.

“But then we’ve conceded straight away.”

Austin continues to provide a lifeline for the side with his goals - with 14 now from 11 appearances this term: “He looks so confident in front of goal.

“The third goal was the pick.

“He’s certainly doing the business.

“But it’s a shame he can’t celebrate his hat-trick because it hasn’t won the game.”
