Backed by a superb following of 1,705 travelling Clarets, goals from Danny Ings and Sam Vokes we enough to retain second place in the Championship, despite a late consolation for Keiffer Moore.

Dyche said: “I thought we were good value for it, some of the football in the second half on a very tough pitch was excellent I felt.

“Their keeper has made a few great saves and we’ve hit the post. We’ve done everything but score the third, which would have killed the game off.

“They’ve worked very hard to get themselves back in with a scruffy one by our standards, and then it turns into a cup tie for 10 minutes where they’re throwing all sorts forward, even their keeper.

“Overall I’m very pleased, I think it’s a tough place to come, and credit to what they’ve achieved here because their group of players are still going hard.

“At 2-0 up I think we did have it by the scruff of the neck, we were controlling the game but they kept going, they forced a goal and then it gets uncomfortable for us for the last 10 minutes.

“But overall I thought we were well deserving of the three points.”

Ings’ goal was his 21st of a remarkable season, and one of his best, a 25-yard screamer into the top corner: “It was a fantastic strike, and our second goal was a good one. Some of our movement and play in the forward third was excellent.

“We want to go hard all the time and be relentless in what we do and there have been great signs of that from Sam and Danny.”

Both Burnley goals came as a result of pressing high up the pitch from central midfielders Dean Marney and David Jones, and Dyche noted: “Deano and Jonah were first class and there were a number of others.

“We want them on the front foot and to be progressive in their pressing but also if you win it high up you can play and you’re already into the final third, which showed with the second goal.”

Ashley Barnes was a late substitute for Ings, a day after completing his switch from Brighton, and Dyche explained why he targeted the young striker: “I’d like to think he brings a bit of experience. He’s only 24.

“He’s someone who wants to improve and develop. He’s certainly not shy on a work ethic.

“We’re hoping he enjoys his time at Burnley and progresses. We believe in developing players and we believe in his development now he’s with us.

“And he will not only support but challenge the group.

“It’s not just about supporting the front two, it’s a challenge to make sure they know he’s someone who’s desperate to get on the football pitch.

“I don’t bring any player to a football club who I don’t think can challenge the team.

“If it’s a young player coming in they’re there for a reason, they’re there to challenge the team and make sure they’re ready if called upon.”

Barnes played as a central striker, wide forward and attacking midfielder at Brighton, but Dyche sees him as a frontman: “I certainly view him as a centre forward primarily.

“It helps that we have that flexibility because we’re carrying about 18 players so of course that flexible nature of a player, who can play in other positions, is always helpful.

“But we’ve brought him in mainly to be a centre forward.

“He’s someone we wanted and someone we like. We think he fits not just the team but the model of the club - not just financially but his development and what he can add to the club.

“There are many boxes that he ticked for our football club at this time.”
