It needed Laurent Koscielny's controversial injury time goal to earn the Gunners the points, with the Frenchman diverting the ball in with his arm, seemingly from an off-side position, after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain flicked the ball goalwards.

Up to that point, Burnley had frustrate Arsenal, with Peter Cech the busier keeper as well, making a fine save to deny Johann Berg Gudmundsson, while Michael Keane hit the bar with a header.

And Wenger said: "It was a big test for us, we are motivated, our attitude was right, but our legs were not as dynamic, we made some technical mistakes as well.

"Burnley made it very difficult for us, they defended very well, they are well-organised in a very intelligent way, and I give merit to my team, they kept going to the end and got a bit lucky.

"We were fortunate to win the game in the end, but you can only have a chance to win the game if you keep going.

"It's the kind of game we could also have lost 1-0.

"Burnley make everybody suffer here, I think that will last to the end of the season."

On the goal, he admitted: "I invite you to sit on the bench - it's impossible to know.

"I was fuming because we played a short corner, and it looked to me we were at the end of the two minutes. Why do we not take a direct corner?

"I didn't see the ball go in, but I've been told by the television we were a bit fortunate to have the goal allowed."
