The England international feels that results elsewhere, standings and talk of survival can become quite distracting, adding that it’s imperative to concentrate on the job in hand.

That continues at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow as the Clarets take on a Swansea City side that has taken nine points from their last five games in the top flight.

“We try not to think of it like that, we concentrate on ourselves and try not to get distracted by what anybody else is doing,” he said.

“I understand there is a league at the end of the day and everyone is doing different things but we try and maintain our focus on ourselves.

“That way you’re not relying on anyone else or looking at anyone else, you’re just focusing on the job at hand.”

He added: “We’ve put ourselves in a great position in the league, but there’s a long way to go and it’s important we carry on.

“There’s always a bigger picture to these things. There’s nothing done yet, there’s a long way to go, we want to keep getting points on the board. We’ve got our second point away from home now and we want to build on that.”

Burnley only have two points for their efforts on the road in the top flight, recently ending a run of four successive 2-1 defeats in the league when fending off the Tigers at the KCOM Stadium.

Heaton accepts that the squad can’t ignore their record away from Turf Moor this season, describing it as the ‘elephant in the room’, but it’s something that they’re looking to rectify in the forthcoming run of games.

“There’s no shying away from anything here, there’s no anxiety,” he said. “I know a lot has been made about it but we don’t make a lot of it ourselves.

“We want to put performances in, we’ve done that, and we’re moving forward with a positive mindset.

“The fact is it’s there. It’s like don’t look at the big elephant, but all you think about is looking at the elephant.

“It’s there but we deal with it. The way to do that is to put the performances in place and that’s another step forward.

“We’ve got a lot of points at home and not so many away but we’re certainly looking to bring the two together.” Skipper Tom Heaton insists that the Premier League table will take care of itself if the Clarets simply focus on themselves.
