We got the balance right - Burnley boss Sean Dyche

Burnley have been keeping clean sheets, but struggling to score of late, but although Nick Pope was undeservedly denied a sixth shut out of the season by a last gasp penalty, the Clarets scored twice for the first time since the opening league game of the season, and could have had more.

As it was, Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood renewed their strike partnership, with both on target in a win which took the Clarets back out of the bottom three and up to 16th, a point behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

Dyche said: “I thought it was a very good performance and a deserved win.

”I think at both ends of the pitch we operated well and we have been talking about the balance of that and how we could create better quality chances.

“We created good quality chances tonight and a number of them.

”If I am being super highly critical I thought the game could have been controlled earlier if we had taken some of those chances.

“On the other hand we saw the game through very well and I thought it was a deserved win for me.”

Having scored six goals in the previous 12 league games, Burnley scored twice at home for the first time since beating Bournemouth 3-0 in February, but Dyche admitted it was a tough decision to restore Barnes, at the expense of Jay Rodriguez: “I am delighted for both of the strikers. It was tough on Jay and was a judgement call, a really tough one to put Barnesy back in, but I just had a feeling the time was right so I am pleased he got a goal.

“They work tremendously hard for the team, our forwards, both in and out of possession and the team performance was the most pleasing against a really good side.”

While Nuno Espírito Santo was not happy with the performance of referee Lee Mason, Dyche felt Wolves were lucky to finish the game with 11 men after Joao Moutinho got away with a late stamp on Josh Brownhill: “I am surprised their lad doesn't get sent off, that to me in the modern game is a red card

“It is not a vicious stamp but it is a stamp nonetheless. That is my confusion with VAR, I don't know. I thought from a distance it didn't look great and then when I saw it on the replay . . .

"In the modern game, how that equates to not getting sent off is beyond me.

"I don't want to see players get sent off by the way but if VAR is there and used, and I believe it was looked at, I just find that impossible.

"They are the bits we have got to refine with VAR, not the machinery and the use of the technology, it is what people are seeing.”

Robbie Brady and Dwight McNeil were forced off with injuries, while Matej Vydra was not in the 20-man squad, and Dyche explained: “Robbie we got off straight away, he felt a tweak in his hamstring which he had a couple of weeks ago.

“Dwight said his groin was tight in the first half but that he would be fine to get through it but in the end he had to come off. That is a little bit more worrying so we will have to wait and see. It is not ideal with Johann still recovering.

“We will just have to wait and see if they are ready (for Leeds on Sunday).

“Vyds tweaked his back in training, it is nothing too serious but he wasn't ready for tonight.”
