“We came out strong and played some good football in the first half and in the second half we had to dig in.

“They lumped a few big balls into the box and they’ve got some big boys.

“It was good for us to dig in and get the three points.”

Vokes made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season, and he was delighted to get off the mark: “It was a fantastic ball from Tripps (Kieran Trippier) and I managed to loop it over into the back stick.

“Tripps and Ross Wallace worked well together as they do every week and Tripps put a fantastic ball in as he does every week and I managed to get on the end of it, which was good.

“It’s good for me to get off the mark. As a striker that’s what you want to do in the first few games of the season and hopefully there are more to come.

“I think the boys have shown a lot of strength and got two wins on the bounce.”
