The 26-year-old netted for the first time in 10 appearances against Charlton Athletic to help halt the club’s six-game stretch without a win.

The Welshman made it 4-0 in the 78th minute after Scott Arfield’s brace and Andre Gray’s 12th goal of the campaign had done the damage at Turf Moor.

“It was a bit of a frustrating period really, obviously not picking up the results and points that we needed, but we’ve ended it and showed a bit of class with it by winning 4-0,” he said.

“We knew if we got the first goal we’d get on top so that was important. We were all over them in the second half. We were the stronger team and we managed to get the goals to win.”

Speaking about his fourth goal of the term, Vokes added: “Hopefully that goal will kickstart that side of things for me. I was wondering whether it was going in because Andre ran in to me. I was just waiting for it, I think everyone was, but it managed to sneak in at the back stick and I was delighted with it. It’s always nice to get a goal.

“As a striker you want to be scoring goals. I think the performances have been there but the goals haven’t matched that. Thankfully it came and it’s a great feeling.

“Confidence is massive and getting a goal always helps with that so it’d be nice to go on a bit of a run now.”

Victory provided Sean Dyche’s side with a four-point cushion over sixth place Ipswich Town in the Championship play-off spots, while results elsewhere meant the Clarets are just three points shy of Boxing Day opponents Hull City.

“It’s tight up there and there’s going to be ups and downs throughout the season,” said Vokes. “We’ve had a little blip recently but we’ve corrected that with a 4-0 win. We’re going in to some tough games now. It’s a massive win and a statement because others, who slipped up, will be looking at that. It’s a chance for us to pounce on them.”
