VIP treatment for supporter's '˜fanniversary'

Arnie Waddington has followed Burnley FC for seven decades, often taking his children Kristina and David, and spent time with George Boyd and Ashley Barnes on the day of the uplifting 2-1 win over the Toffees, as well as getting his programme signed by Graeme Sharp.

Now living in Morecambe, Arnie enjoyed lunch at the match and had the best view on offer of Scott Arfield’s late winner, which saw Burnley climb into 14th place.

Tony Rastick, Arnie’s son-in-law, said: “It was more than we expected and overwhelming for us all. I know dad was totally in awe and emotional of the occasion. He actually choked back tears and it made us happy to see him happy.

“Memories are so precious and Saturday will never be forgotten. We brought our luck with us and a Burnley win a perfect end to the day.”An A Team player at Towneley, Arnie held ambitions of a professional career himself before entering the National Service at 16, but has been a steadfast fan ever since, having played during his time in the army.

“His most memorable match was when Burnley beat Man United 6-1 in December 1963,” said Tony. “He remembers being let in free at the Bee Hall End - now the Jimmy McIlroy Stand.”
