United boss Van Gaal set for second Turf trip

Tomorrow won’t be Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal’s first visit to Turf Moor.

Van Gaal was in charge of the Ajax side that came to Burnley to play a friendly in May 1992, after the Clarets had been crowned Fourth Division champions.

Ajax were also celebrating winning the UEFA Cup, and fielded a side lacking the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk, who were with Holland preparing for the European Championships, but brimming with players who would go on and become household names in European football.

Among that side that night were future Manchester United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar, defender Michael Reiziger and midfielder Edgar Davids, while van Gaal also named Marciano Vink, six-time Eredivisie winner and UEFA Champions League victor Sonny Silooy, Dan Petersen, John Hansen, Michel Kreek, Rob Alflen, Alfons Groenendijk, striker Ron Willems, who went on to feature for Derby County in the Premier League, and goalscorer Ignacio Tuhuteru. Ajax won 1-0 with a goal seven minutes from time.
