The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich chief, who brought his Ajax side to Burnley for a friendly game back in 1992, was let frustrated by the Clarets, despite handing a debut to £59.7m man Angel Di Maria.

Van Gaal said: “I think in the first half we did the same as Burnley, fighting, and I think we have to play the ball against teams like this.

“We did that much better in the second half and created much more chances, but them you have to score, and we didn’t.

“It’s a disappointing result.”

Di Maria came off midway through the second half, and he expects the former Real Madrid man to get better with games: “He was not the world class player we have seen, but I have already said you cannot expect that because he has to adapt to the English way of playing, and to his fellow players to adapt to his way of playing. That needs time.”

Van Gaal is set to be reunited with Dutch utility man Daley Blind, who he confirmed is due to come over for a medical after agreeing a £16m switch from Ajax.
