Trippier’s joy at Turf Moor move

But the 20-year-old feels feels he can progress his promising career further at Burnley.

The 20-year-old right back joined the Clarets on a season-long loan from Manchester City on Tuesday, as a like-for-like replacement for Bolton-bound Tyrone Mears.

He signed in time to make his debut in the goal-less draw at Oldham that night.

And after spending the best part of the last season and a half on loan at Championship rivals Barnsley, the Bury-born England Under 21 international believes his move to Turf Moor is perfect for him: “I’ve gained loads of experience in the Championship and I feel I can take it further and keep progressing by playing with players like there is here at Burnley.

“I think I can become a better footballer.

“I played against Tyrone last year obviously, and I think he’s a quality player.

“He’s progressed and is playing in the Premier League again (with Bolton).

“I’ve come from what I feel is a bigger club, and I’m just happy to play here.”

Trippier found some familiar faces on his arrival, having played with Ben Mee in Manchester City’s FA Youth Cup-winning team in 2008, while he was on loan at Barnsley just over a year ago when Jay Rodriguez has a spell at Oakwell.

He has also played with both at England Under 21 level, and he said: “I’ve played with Ben Mee since the youth academy at City, in the reserves and with the England squads.

“Jay was at Barnsley when I was a couple of seasons ago and I met him again with the Under 21s against Italy.

“It’s good to meet up with them again.

“They’ve made me feel welcome and part of the team.

“I think I’m going to settle in very quickly here.”

He joins a squad whose average age is coming down rapidly, and he feels the prospects are good at Turf Moor: “Burnley have some quality players so there’s every reason to want to get into the play-offs and get promoted again this season because I feel we can do very well.

“That’s the expectation, to get back in the Premier League.

“But the Championship is tough. It was my first time playing against a lot of quality players who have played in the Premier League.

“It’s going to be even tougher this season with the likes of West Ham and Birmingham coming down. It will be difficult.

“Leicester’s a team to watch as well because they’ve spent a lot of money and are trying to push to get into the Premier League.

“We’ve got a good team and I think we can do well this season.

“There are a few teams to watch in the Championship. Anybody can beat anybody in this league.”

Like Mears, Trippier is a pacy full back who loves to get forward, and he shares a love of taking free kicks - netting twice for Barnsley last season, while he already has one to his name for City in pre-season: “When I was at Barnsley I stayed behind after most training sessions with the manager, Mark Robins, doing free kicks and it paid off against Leeds in the last minute and Doncaster. It was good to score in the two derbies.”
