Trippier inspired by Clyne’s England rise

The 24-year-old, who has represented his country from under 18 level through to the under 21’s, admitted that facing Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne fuelled the fire for international selection.

The pair were opposing right-backs at Turf Moor at the weekend with Trippier later confirming that he’s been inspired by Clyne’s rise.

The 23-year-old, who started out in the Championship with Crystal Palace in October 2008, made his debut for Roy Hodgson’s side last month in the Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Slovenia.

“He deserves it, he’s been brilliant this year and last year, I used to watch him a lot,” he said. “He’s a great right-back and I can learn off Nathaniel because he has played a lot of games in the Premier League. I never say never, I’ll just keep doing my best in this league and hopefully I stay for as long as I can.

“I used to watch him when he was at Palace, he’s stepped up to Southampton and he’s done brilliantly. I’m delighted for him but obviously you want to play for your country and he’s no different to myself, but there’s no rush and I just need to keep focusing on my performances and see where it takes me.”
