Tom Heaton itching to get back into league action

But while he will have to kick his heels until the trip to Nottingham Forest a week on Saturday, the former Cardiff stopper admits it is a good feeling to be top of the Championship for another fortnight at least.

Heaton said after the 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth on Saturday: “I’d rather play again on Tuesday to be brutally honest, but there are a few little knocks that it will allow us to get sorted, and then we go again all guns blazing for a couple of away games.

“Someone mentioned no one in the top six won, and it’s obviously nice to go into the break top, not that we’re focussing on that, but it’s nice that teams didn’t capitalise on us not winning.”

And he feels the mental strength demonstrated in coming from behind to draw the last two league games can only serve the side well.

There was some disappointment not to beat Bournemouth on Saturday, but Heaton said: “If the game goes on another five minutes we probably win it, but it’s a good point and we’re unbeaten in 11 league games.

“That’s a mark of how far we’ve come that there’s a little bit of disappointment, it feels like two points dropped.

“For me it’s all about how we approached the game and the performance, and we can take a lot from that again.

“Last season, going one behind, the lads said they felt they would possibly concede another and go a bit too gung-ho, but we have the forwards to get back in the game, and we always feel defensively we can keep it at one, which is important once you go behind.

“There’s no disappointments on the pitch, straight away there’s a reaction.

“We reacted really well again.”
