Time we started to climb, says Burnley hero Edgar

The Canadian international defender scored his first goals for the club – and first since April 2010 when on loan at Swansea.

The Clarets looked on course for a fifth-straight defeat – dropping into the relegation zone in the process – with 12 minutes to go, as they trailed to Matty Fryatt’s two strikes.

But Edgar’s double and Jay Rodriguez’s injury-time winner hauled Burnley up to 16th.

They are still within two points of the bottom three – but only six points from a play-off place ahead of tomorrow night’s visit of Ipswich Town to Turf Moor.

Edgar, who famously scored his first career goal on his home debut for Newcastle against Manchester United, now has five to his name, and he hopes the goals and the win will prove a turning point.

He said: “The three points is massive because we’ve got to start looking up the table and not down.

“It’s a long season. We know we’ve got the quality in our team to move up the table.

“We’ve got to kick on from here and stop getting negative results and negative thoughts in our head because we’re all together in that dressing room and we’ve been somewhat unlucky in the last couple of weeks.”

Burnley had lost the previous two games to last-gasp goals, so it was sweet for the boot to be on the other foot.

Edgar added: “The last couple of games we’ve been unlucky to be on the back end of results like that, probably not what we deserved.

“But we probably didn’t deserve the three points at Hull but we all stuck together and dug in and that’s a massive three points for us.

“The dressing room on Tuesday at Birmingham was a really depressing place.

“It really hurt everyone.

“The last 15 minutes here showed no one wanted to be on the back of a 2-0 or 2-1 defeat.

“We wanted the points. We did not want to lose five in a row.”

Edgar’s first was a fine header back across keeper Peter Gulacsi from Ross Wallace’s cross, but the second was worthy of a striker, a falling volley into the roof of the net from a flick on from half-time substitute Sam Vokes.

And Edgar smiled: “The second goal must have looked better than it felt I guess.

“I just gambled off the flick and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

“The goals couldn’t come at a better time.

“Big Sam came on in the second half and made a presence up there and helped Jay who probably didn’t get the service he needed in the first half.

“The first goal helped us, we got on the front foot and made them make mistakes.

“With the second goal, anything could happen after that, we defended well and Jay took the winner fantastically well.”
