Tarky is eager for more after debut

The 23-year-old, signed from Brentford for £3m, made his Burnley debut as a first half substitute in the 2-0 win against Rotherham at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The former Oldham man came on for Michael Keane, who was forced off feeling dazed, after a head injury, suffered in a collision with Millers keeper Lee Camp.

Tarkowski had expected to have to be patient to figure, with Keane and Ben Mee in fine form, but he said: “Unfortunately for Keano, he’s had to come off, and fortunately for me I’ve managed to play.

“We managed to get a clean sheet and I’ve done all right, and hopefully I can keep my spot. But the team’s the most important thing and getting promotion.

“It’s nice to come into a team that’s doing well. It’s never easy to come into a team that’s struggling down the bottom – it means you get stuck straight in there.

“But to come into a team that’s doing well and get your chance to settle and integrate with the players has been good.”

Tarkowski showed glimpses of his repertoire – his composure in possession and aerial ability, but admits there is much more to come: “I think there’s maybe a few more strings to my bow from what you saw.

“I like to give a lot more on the ball than I’ve probably shown. It was quite simple, into the channels as you do, but in certain games you’ve got to do that.

“I like to think I can step out with the ball and cause a few more problems but I just had to keep my game simple.

“It’s never easy coming into a game like that so I did the job that I had to do. But hopefully over the coming weeks and the coming seasons I’ll be able to show a bit more.”

And the Mancunian felt it was a deserved win over Rotherham, to take the Clarets second in the table: “You’d say so. They came up and played direct. We dealt with it for the most part, but they’re going to win one or two flick-ons and I think most teams will always get at least one chance.

“But we took our chances and they didn’t take theirs.

“You think they’ve had nothing for most of the game, but they could get 1-1 at the end.

“But thankfully we got the second goal which made the last five or 10 minutes more comfortable.”

Nottingham Forest visit Turf Moor tonight, and Tarkowski added: “It’s another opportunity to get three points and keep pushing up that table and keep picking up the points, which is what we want to do and need to do.”
